Bassnectar’s All Colors Saved the Day

After having a few rough days, I decided only some great music would get me out of this funk. Opened up Napster (yes Napster, it’s actually pretty great), scrolled through new releases recommend for me, I found it, the new Bassnectar album, All Colors.

Bassnectar is that dubsteppy mashup goodness that makes my heart happy. He took up the torch from early dubstep DJs and brought it to another electro level.

All  Colors is pure hard hitting, sound system shaking electro bass magic, with a timely message. Bassnectar’s website says he is focusing more on promoting compassion, mindfulness, anti-racism and social change within the community.

Doesn’t the world need more of this right now? I know I do. We need MUSIC and ART and LOVE more than ever, to widen the support of our communities, to be closer to the things we can find beauty, craftsmanship, solace, and camaraderie in right now. The isolation we are experiencing is hard on many, and even an introvert like me wants to socialize sometimes these days. Great music makes you feel less alone. That is the message I got from the album.

The title track with Blakkamoore “brings the sounds…of roots culture” with those unmistakable Bassnectar deep grooves and layers of dirty, grimy synths. Everything I love.

Open Your Mind’s robotic, hypnotic vocal really did help me just be in the moment, lighten the formidable load, and forget about the crap going on all around me, and say “fuck yeah,” this is just what I needed.

I also needed The Antidote to all that ails me. This  takes me back to the SF Bay Area with Zion I on the track. Saw him a handful of times around there in the in the mid 2000’s.

Same for Skin on the Drum, with Michael Franti & Spearhead, a Bay Area music scene staple. Franti has always been a social and political activist through his music, and this collaboration with Bassnectar is insprirational.

So All Colors, it’s wonderful. And BASSY. And it’s energetic and disorienting at very loud levels, which is of course how I play it! And it saved the day! Enjoyz!  Bassnectar’s All Colors Saved the Day
