Revisiting Circle Jerks and Black Flag

I got a little obsessed checking out bio videos of Circle Jerks and Black Flag this weekend. I never really got to hear Black Flag while growing up in Indiana. I didn’t know anyone into that kind of thing. My friends were usually more metal back then. The art of Black Flag was always very inspirational with the 4 bars and odd album covers. It is interesting to listen so many years later and get into it.

I didn’t realize that Keith Morris of Circle Jerks started Black Flag and left before they recorded their first album. I actually got to see the Circle Jerks on their VI tour with a friend in Indianapolis at the old Arlington Theater on July 10, 1988. It was a life changing experience. 7 Seconds opened up for them. The music was intense, awesome and fast. The pit was amazing. We slammed all night.

Seeing Circle Jerks really changed my perspective on the music industry and how to release music and reach an underground fan base. I owe a big thanks to my friend that go me into punk and took me to that show. There are some great live shows online from both Circle Jerks and Black Flag. Check them out and relive those amazing times!
